Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary
After exhausting every other option, Dr. Phadnis may recommend a tooth extraction if:
- There is a large cavity that is starting to threaten the surrounding teeth
- Physical trauma has broken the enamel and made it too weak to support a restoration
- Advanced gum disease has weakened the bone needed to support a tooth
- Room is needed in the mouth to place a new denture
- A stubborn baby tooth is preventing an adult tooth from coming in straight
The Process of Removing a Tooth
The process of removing a tooth depends largely on one thing: whether the tooth is above the gumline or is trapped underneath. If it’s above the gumline, then Dr. Phadnis will gently rock it loose until it’s ready to come out. If it’s underneath the gumline, then she will create a small incision in order to access the tooth before removing it. It’s important that we mention here that the first step of the treatment process in both cases is to numb your mouth thoroughly. That way, you don’t feel any pain or discomfort during your time in the treatment chair.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
A few hours after you leave our West Hartford dental office, the numbing agent will begin to wear off. To prevent any discomfort from arising, we recommend using a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time and taking OTC pain medication as directed. Additionally, we encourage our patients to stick to the following guidelines to prevent any complications:
- Don’t spit, smoke, or use a straw
- Get plenty of rest, especially during the first 24 hours
- Stick to soft foods, like vegetable soup
- Keep your mouth clean
- Change the gauze as needed
