Don’t Be Afraid of Dental Implants

It’s normal to be a little nervous when you think about dental implant surgery, especially if you don’t know what to expect. But what shouldn’t be normalized is letting that anxiety take control and stopping you from protecting your oral health. If you’re ready to improve your smile with the help of dental implants, here are some important reasons why you shouldn’t let fear hold you back!

You’ll Be Comfortable

One of the biggest fears about dental implant surgery is that it could be painful. Thankfully, you’ll be under local anesthesia, so while you will be awake and aware of your surroundings during the procedure, you won’t feel what’s going on in your mouth.

Once the anesthesia wears off, you should only experience minor discomfort that can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication. Today’s techniques are minimally invasive to your gum tissue, and your gums will be sutured with self-absorbing stitches that dissolve and will not need to be removed.

There’s a High Success Rate

You may have heard stories in the past about dental implants failing, but this is very rare. In fact, the success rate for surgery is about 95 percent. Your dentist has been well trained in recognizing bone deterioration, and if he or she feels that your jawbone is not strong enough to accept an implant, you will either be recommended for a bone graft procedure first, or you will not be recommended for dental implants at all.

It Won’t Be Obvious You’re Healing

After your surgery, your dentist will provide you with a temporary denture or crowns to use until your implants have healed and are ready for your permanent crowns. Your smile will look completely natural, and you’ll still be able to chew soft foods. Once your implants are ready, your new teeth will not look “fake” and they will even provide almost as much biteforce as real teeth would.

You’re Worth It

While dental implants can be an investment, it is an investment in yourself and in your oral health. Replacing missing teeth improves your smile, helps you eat a wide range of nutritious foods, and prevents further bone deterioration in the jaw. Furthermore, because they are permanent, you will not need to replace your dental implants every five to ten years like you would your dentures, making them a better value than other, more-temporary means of tooth restoration.

Remember, while it’s okay to be a little anxious about getting dental implants, there’s no reason to let those fears stop you from taking control of your oral health.
