Things You Should Avoid Putting in Your Mouth

Have you ever used your mouth as a tool or to hold small objects? Don’t worry – you’re not alone. Mindless habits like chewing on a pen or biting your nails may seem harmless, but they can damage your teeth. Every year, dentists see patients who have chipped or broken a tooth after biting the wrong thing. Luckily, being mindful of the items you put in your mouth is an easy way to prevent a dental emergency from occurring. Read along to learn which things you should avoid putting in your mouth.

Lemons

Although lemons are considered a fruit, you shouldn’t eat them like one. They’re highly acidic and can cause much more damage than you think. Sucking on a slice of lemon can harm the enamel on your teeth and throw off the mouth’s pH balance. To protect your mouth, simply add a slice of lemon to a beverage to enhance its flavor. You can use a straw to minimize the exposure of acid to your teeth even more.

Fingernails

Did you know that about 20 to 30 percent of Americans have a nail-biting habit? Some do it because it’s a nervous habit, while others may do it as a convenient way to fix an uneven nail. Regardless, biting your nails is highly unsanitary because you’re introducing unwanted germs and bacteria from your hands to your mouth. Plus, it can wear down your teeth and create cracks in the enamel.

Pen or Pencil

While working on a project or a homework assignment, some people may mindlessly gnaw on the end of a pen or pencil. Unfortunately, this habit can result in chipped or broken teeth if you bite too hard. Also, dentists warn that it’s easier to ingest particles and germs that can make you sick. A healthier alternative is to chew on a stick of sugar-free gum instead. It’ll freshen your breath and keep your smile safe!

Hard Candy

If you have a sweet tooth, you might occasionally crave some hard candy. However, they are some of the most harmful treats because the candy lingers in your mouth for a long time. Sometimes they can take up to 10 minutes to dissolve! The longer the candy is in your mouth, the more time sugar has to cling to your teeth. Plus, chewing on it can lead to cracked teeth and cut gum tissue.

Bottle Caps

When you can’t open a bottle or container, it’s tempting to try and crank it open with your teeth. But this is another easy way to crack or break a tooth. You also increase your risk of muscle pain and TMJ problems. Instead of using your mouth, find a bottle opener or ask someone with a strong grip to open it for you.

Dental emergencies are frightening and can happen unexpectedly. Luckily, you can keep your smile safe and prevent one by never putting any of the things outlined above in your mouth!
