How To Prepare for Dental Implant Surgery
June 20, 2024
Generally speaking, when it comes to pretty much anything in life the better prepared you are, the more successful you will be. You can’t expect to win a basketball game if you don’t have a ball and practice, and while it’s possible, it’s much easier to catch a fish with a fishing pole than with your bare hands. The same applies to dental implant surgery. While the procedure itself will be in the capable hands of your dentist, there is still much you can do to better prepare yourself for success.
If you’re planning to get dental implant surgery, here are a few ways to increase your odds of a smooth recovery!
Ask Questions
Whether you’re confused about after care instructions, unsure what the surgery entails, or need clarification on pre-operative guidelines, don’t be shy about asking your dentist for more information before your surgery date. Not only will it help ease your mind, but it can also help you have a more successful surgery and healing process.
Follow Pre-Op Instructions
Before your surgery, your dentist will provide you with a set of preoperative instructions. These might include medications you need to take or discontinue, instructions to arrange a ride to and from the procedure, and how to prepare your mouth the day of. Be sure to follow these instructions to the letter, as they can seriously affect your outcome.
Clear Your Calendar
Recovery time for dental implant surgery can take a few weeks to complete, but you should be able to return to your normal activities after about 24-48 hours depending on how many implants you received. Be sure to clear your schedule so that you have time to recuperate properly. Take a few days off from work, reschedule any appointments, and make plans to relax. This will not only help your body adjust to the new implants, but it will also help ensure all of the effects of the anesthesia have worn off. Plus, you deserve a little break!
Stock Up
Following your surgery, you will need to eat soft foods for the first few days. Do your grocery shopping before surgery so you can rest after the procedure without needing to go out. You should also make sure that you have supplies like over-the-counter pain medication on hand and that you have picked up any post-op prescriptions as well.
Remember, a successful recovery depends largely on you. With these steps in mind, you will be better prepared to improve your odds of a positive experience and outcome from your dental implant procedure.
